Full Mouth Reconstruction in Colorado Springs, CO
What is a Full Mouth Reconstruction?
Full mouth reconstruction refers to the process of completely restoring all of the teeth in your mouth. Unlike a “smile makeover,” it is a necessary series of procedures to restore function rather than an elective procedure for cosmetic reasons. Full mouth reconstruction is needed when teeth have been lost, injured, fractured, or worn down by acid erosion. It may also be necessary if a patient suffers from chronic jaw pain due to bite problems.
How is a Full Mouth Reconstruction different than a Smile Makeover?
While a smile makeover may use the same techniques used in full mouth reconstruction, such as replacing missing teeth with dental implants, the purpose is different. A smile makeover focuses on the aesthetic aspects of dental reconstruction. It may include purely cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening. A full mouth reconstruction, while improving the patient’s appearance, is focused on restoring and preserving oral health and function.
Who Might Need a Full Mouth Reconstruction?
You might need full mouth reconstruction for many reasons based on the loss of all or most of your teeth or because many of your teeth have to be removed for health reasons. Patients with any of the following conditions might need full mouth reconstruction to improve their oral health and restore their ability to chew, eat, and smile properly:
- Severe periodontal disease that causes gums to recede or leads to repeated infections.
- Severely eroded teeth from clenching or grinding.
- Dental trauma from an accident or damage to the face or mouth that results in damaged or missing teeth.
- Persistent jaw pain or headaches due to misalignment of the jaw.
- Congenital abnormalities to the teeth and jaws.
- Certain diseases that negatively impact the teeth and jaw, including ectodermal dysplasia, amelogenesis, oral cancer, and dentinogenesis imperfecta.

What is the process for getting Full Mouth Reconstruction?
Dr. Pickle will start with an initial consultation to evaluate your dental health and the condition of your jaw and teeth, as well as to take X-rays and digital images. He will assess the condition of any remaining teeth, previous dental work performed, jaw alignment, gum health, and any issues that exist. If cavities, infections, or abscesses are present, they must be treated before full mouth rehabilitation can begin.
If needed, Dr. Pickle will consult with other dental specialists who may be required to treat specific aspects of your full-mouth reconstruction. Dental reconstruction may require collaboration with an orthodontist, periodontist, or other specialist to develop a customized treatment plan for each step of the rehabilitation.
Every patient’s full-mouth reconstruction is different and, therefore, requires various procedures. Full-mouth reconstruction typically includes replacing missing teeth, usually with full-mouth implants. However, other dental reconstruction procedures, such as bone grafting, may also be needed. Usually, full-mouth reconstruction requires multiple office visits and some healing time. Dr. Pickle will determine which procedure or combination of procedures is necessary to restore and rebuild your perfect smile.
Does insurance cover Full Mouth Reconstructions?
Because full mouth reconstruction is considered medically necessary, it is covered by most medical insurance. Anesthesia or sedation may be covered depending on the type of sedation used. For instance, general anesthesia is generally covered by medical insurance, while oral sedation may be covered under dental insurance. We encourage you to discuss your coverage limits and copays with your insurance carriers to avoid surprises during your treatment.
Dr. Pickle and his dental care team have performed many full mouth reconstructions over the years. If you struggle to eat, chew, speak, and enjoy life due to severely damaged or missing teeth, full mouth reconstruction can help.
